Toast of the Town

Top Toasting Essentials

Read these top toasting tips designed to get grooms and groomsmen prepared for the spotlight

Prepare Yourself

Even though it may seem overly precautious, prepare your mini speech ahead of time. Unless you're a gifted orator, impromptu speeches often lack meaning.

Keep it Simple

Don't try to make the speech more dramatic or heartfelt than you are. Be yourself, speak using the words you would normally use, and don't ramble on and on and on.

Don't Isolate the Audience

If only a handful of people will understand an inside joke, skip it. If it's negative or inappropriate, don't go there either. Joking about college escapades or a former girlfriend just isn't funny in front of grandma and grandpa .

Keep their Attention

If the audience can't hear you, you'll surely lose their attention. Speak in a strong voice or use a microphone.

Toast on Time

Decide in advance when you will begin the toasting and make sure your wedding party knows the plan.

Big Finish

When you're finished, let the audience know it's time to chime in. Something like "Please join me in congratulating the happy couple, John and Barbara. To John and Barbara!"
